June 06th, 2018 – July 28th, 2018
OPNING Wednesday, June 06th, 2018 from 7 pm to 11 pm during the evening “Nocturne Rive Droite”.
The Teodora Gallery is pleased to present Alessandra Maio’s first solo exhibition in France. Graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna with a Master 2 in Art History, this young Italian artist combines in her works plastic and writing. Her favorite tools are cotton paper, pen, pencil, watercolor and for a time now she has been experimenting with canvas painting. The titles of her works are utterances : “I’m looking for something that does not exist”, “I do not have to think about it anymore”, “To be confused to understand each other”. Intense, incisive, sometimes delicate as feathers, sometimes solid as anchors, these phrases are a mantra, a prayer, a moment to question one’s desires and fears.
The repetition of sentences is an inner analysis that helps her to dispel doubts and work on her frailties. Repeating becomes a way of knowing oneself, gives her courage.
Chosen with care, the words are intended to communicate her state of mind. her work has a performative dimension and allows her to access meditation. Graphic activity is also at the heart of her practice, and is embodied in her interest for notebooks, true receptacles of memories and emotions.
In the exhibition “The head in the clouds”, Alessandra Maio devotes the first room to the blue color, declined in different shades.
On one hand, it deploys a series of clouds, resulting from photos taken years ago, printed on cotton paper on which the sentences are linked.
On the other hand, the artist submits horizons made in acrylic on canvas, the lower part of which is covered with handwritten writings, which merge with the painting, in the manner of the fog that erases the horizon.
In the second room, she presents watercolor horizons that follow the same principle and nine horizons colored in acrylic and pencil arranged in a geometric composition.
The words become form by dissolving themselves until they become confused between blue skies, white clouds and multicolored horizons. It’s like a silent scream written on paper, that of Alessandra Maio, a whisper that takes every viewer into an emotional and exciting part.
Because her artworks speak of life, the complexity of feelings … they speak of love.
